Get Your Medicine

October 09 2012

I came across this blog post by strength and conditioning coach Martin Rooney. In the post he talks about something that doesn't get brought up often enough, the importance of sleep!  In the post, he writes about how exercise, nutrition and sleep are the three most important medicines for the human body yet very few of us have learned how to dose them correctly.

He's got a point.. there is so much information out there on how we should be exercising and how much physical activity we should be getting each week.  And there are so many different nutrition blogs that offer varying opinions on why we should be eating a mostly plant based diet or going gluten free or following in the footsteps of our primal ancestors. But there isn't nearly as much information on how much sleep we should be getting every night or how beneficial that sleep is to our health and well being.

Our sleep is regulated by a powerful internal drive.  If you try go without it for too long, you’re bound to crash and burn!  The sleep experts aren’t exactly sure WHY we need sleep but they’re certain of the fact that we DO need sleep!  In fact, animals that are deprived entirely of sleep start to lose immune function and die in a matter of weeks!

The fact of the matter is that without sleep we never reap the full benefits of our two other main medicines, eating and training.  All of the following occur while we are sleeping:

  • Secretion of Growth Hormone
  • Tissue Repair
  • Muscle Growth
  • Protein Synthesis

So try to get that least 7-8 hours of sleep per night and start reaping more benefits from all of your hard training and healthy eating!
