NCCP Weightlifting Coach

December 14 2012

My training partner Jordy and I attended a weightlifting course last weekend and we're now officially NCCP Level 1 Weightlifting Club Coaches! The NCCP is a nationally recognized coaching certification program that covers most if not all amateur sports.

The course was instructed by former Olympian Guy Greavette and was held at the Richmond Oval. The Oval was one of the venue's for the 2010 Winter Olympics and is an absolutely beautiful facility! The course was 2 days and covered the clean & jerk and the snatch as well as progressions for both lifts and a variety of accessory exercises. It was a lot fun and I picked up some really good coaching cues but was feeling a little beat up by the end of the second day.

I've been working on these lifts for a few years now and I'm finally starting to feel like I know what I'm doing.  They're pretty technical movements and they've been a bit of a challenge for me. I'm a perfectionist and it's really hard to get these movements to feel anywhere close to perfect.  I really wish I could have had the opportunity to learn them when I was in my teens because I think I would have picked them up a lot quicker!

It was great to get some different perspectives and advice from the coaching staff. Guy and his assistants were top notch instructors and he personally knew a ton about the sport. You could tell that it was his true passion and  I hope I get the chance to train with him again.

And if these lifts ever start to really good, I might even think about entering a local weightlifting competition in the next year or two!
