Spartan Race

May 27 2012

Marlaena and I are doing the Tough Mudder next month so we decided to do another race called the Spartan Race the other week to help us prepare. Neither one of us have done any kind of adventure racing before that involves trail running and obstacles and I haven't ran any significant distances (over 2-3km) in quite some time so we thought we better get our feet wet before taking on the Tough Mudder, which is supposed to be one of the hardest races in the world!

The Spartan Race is a bit shorter than the Tough Mudder.. (it's only 5km instead of 17km) and the obstacles aren't quite as extreme. I went in a bit too cocky though and thought that I would be able to get through it in a breeze but I was humbled back to reality FAST! It was WAY harder than I thought it would be and was absolutely gassed at the end. It started with an uphill run that lasted for easily half of the race and then it went into a super steep downhill portion where I thought I was going to bail several times!

Some of the obstacles along the way were pretty tough too. There was one where you had to carry two buckets of rocks up a hill and then back down. And another where you had to walk along some 2x10's that were stacked on the tall side. I fell off right away and had to do 25 burpees before I could continue on. The second last obstacle was a spear throw which I nailed! The last one was another balancing obstacle where you had to climb across a small climbing wall. I fell off half way and had to do another 25 ugly burpees.

I finished the race in just under 34 minutes... Mar finished a few minutes after me. I'm really glad we decided to do it. It made me open my eyes a bit and realize that I better do a bit more running in preparation for this upcoming Tough Mudder in Whistler, B.C. (super crazy mountains!) Who would have thought.. having to run to get ready for an outdoor adventure running race!!
